Urban Forest Project – Tacoma, WA
Each year the Urban Forest Project picks a few cities to work with and in 2011 one of them was Tacoma. The goal of the Urban Forest Project is to bring the forest to the city so they use local artists to create banners that line city streets. After the banners have been up for a while, UFP takes them down and makes messenger bags out of them to sell and earn money for the continuation of the project. The project is volunteer for the designers but is juried by the Urban Forest Project.
For my banner I was thinking about freeing the trees to let them grow. I also was thinking about how “free” I feel in the trees and that a trip to the forest always rejuvenates my soul and releases my playful spirit. I started with some brainstorming and sketches. Then designed my banner in Illustrator and created the patterns used throughout the layout.
It was such an exciting project. Seeing my banner in downtown Tacoma amongst the many other artist’s banners felt like I had a visual conversation on the street. It was also amazing to see how other artist interpreted the subject. I’ve included images of the banner and the messenger bag. If you click the image it will rotate through the pictures. Enjoy!
